Angry Youths Beat Police Officer For Allegedly Attacking Farmer & Son In Osun

There was pandemonium in Osogbo, the Osun State capital on Wednesday as a police officer allegedly caused an accident that left a farmer with a fractured leg.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at the Owo Eba area of Osogbo.

It was gathered that some aggrieved residents, who were infuriated by the action of the policeman, reportedly descended on a police officer found at the spot where the incident occurred, and beat him up, leaving him drenched with blood.

It was learnt that the incident, which led to panic in the area, forced many businesses to abruptly shut down for the day, as angry mob attacked the said policeman.

It was further learnt that some police operatives and men of the Osun Security Network popularly known as Amotekun corps that were deployed to the scene later rescued the policeman, as the mob fled in different directions to escape being arrested.

According to a resident, who declined to be named, one Hamzat Kazeem, a farmer, said to be travelling on a motorcycle with his son, was attacked by a policeman, which triggered the unrest.

Speaking on his bed at a bone setter house in Osogbo, Kazeem, who fractured one of his leg during the accident, explained that the erring policeman thought he and his son wanted to escape being checked, when he suddenly swooped on them at Owo Eba area on their way to farm, and started struggling the handle with his son who drove the motorcycle.

“I am a farmer and I sell planks. I was on my way to farm going on motorcycle that was driven by my son. We were approaching Owo eba. I wanted to see a welder in the area. Some policemen were few meters away watching us.

“They probably felt we saw them and we wanted to avoid them. As we turned sideways to see the welder, one policeman just came towards our side and pointed gun at us. The boy was so scared and the policeman didn’t stop at that, he was struggling the motorcycle handle with my son and the motorcycle lost balance.

“We both fell and I fractured my leg. I could not stand again. I immediately held him because he wanted to run away. He was pleading with me to allow him go. He even promised to pay for my treatment. Some colleagues of the policeman that caused the accident carried me here. Some policemen have also come around to talk to me.”

Speaking on the incident, the Field Commander, Osun Amotekun Corps, Amitolu Shittu, confirmed that some operatives were deployed to the area to prevent break down of law and order.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, when contacted, promised to investigate and revert but as of the time of filing this report, she had yet to do so.
